Cybersecurity and how to be better prepared to face cybercrime will be one of the key issues on the table between India and UK during British Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Delhi and Mumbai next week.
Both the countries have been on the receiving end of serious cyberthreats with India facing one of its worst attacks in July 2012 when over 10,000 email addresses of top Indian government officials were hacked in a single day including those working in the PM's office and the ministries of defence, external affairs, home and finance.
India and UK had earlier agreed to conduct a cybersecurity dialogue on a bi-annual basis. However, Indian officials in the UK say more substantiative outcomes like ways to reduce cyberthreats and to tackle cybercrime are expected to be ironed out during Cameron's visit.
Fifteen British organizations are working together to combat cybercrime in UK whose experiences, officials say, will great benefit India.
Cybersecurity has become a major global concern. India arrested 1,630 people for cyber-crimes in 2011 ? an increase from 799 arrests in 2010, 288 arrests in 2009.
The cost of cybercrime to the UK is currently estimated to be between ?18 billion and ?27 billion. The government recently committed ?650 million of additional funding for its National Cyber Security programme through to 2015.
