Remains Of U.S. Airman From '46 Crash Identified, To Be Laid To Rest

On Nov. 1, 1946, a B-17 Flying Fortress on a flight from Naples to an airfield outside London slammed into the Mont Blanc mountain range with such force that the wreckage and remains of its eight airmen were scattered over a wide area on both sides of the Italian-French border.

Eight months later, the mountain known as the Aiguilles des Glaciers started to give up the wreckage and dead in a process that continued for more than three decades.

The body parts were interred at Arlington National Cemetery under a tombstone bearing the names of all those lost.

Now, thanks to DNA testing, some of the remains have been identified as those of Staff Sgt. Zoltan Joseph Dobovich, originally of Riegelsville, Bucks County.

They were returned Monday to Dobovich's family in a ceremony at Philadelphia International Airport after a flight from the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory in Honolulu.

Veterans belonging to the Patriots Guard and Warriors Watch provided a motorcycle escort for the hearse on the trip to the funeral home in Mount Holly.

A military funeral is set for Thursday at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in North Hanover Township, Burlington County, and Gov. Christie has ordered the U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half staff at state facilities in Dobovich's honor.

Carlton Dobovich, the airman's nephew, who was born after Sgt. Dobovch died, said the family was grateful that his remains had been identified.

"It really feels good knowing he's been identified and we'll have him close so we can visit him," he said.

Carlton's father, Anthony, a World War II veteran who died in 2006, is buried in the same cemetery.

His father and uncle were very close as boys, and Anthony Dobovich would be "delirious" if he were alive to learn his brother's remains finally had been identified, Carlton Dobovich said.

Zoltan Dobovich was the youngest of five children, the nephew said. Their parents were Hungarian immigrant farmers, and their father died when Zoltan was a young boy.

Zoltan Dobovich was 18 when he joined the Army in Allentown on Dec. 7, 1943, the second anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.

After serving in the infantry, he joined the Army Air Corps as a radioman during the war.

It was in that position that he boarded the postwar flight from Naples to the Bovingdon airfield northwest of London. Also on board were Cols. Ford L. Fair, chief of staff of the European Air Transport Service, and Hudson H. Upham, assistant chief of staff for traffic for the service, who was listed as the pilot on the flight manifest.

The purpose of the predawn flight remains unknown, and Carlton Dobovich said his efforts to get an answer have been unsuccessful.

After the plane failed to arrive at Bovingdon, it was reported missing.

An air search for the missing plane was called off after 18 days, according to the European-based Committee for the Commemoration of the Crew of the B-17 of the Aiguilles des Glaciers.

An inquiry established that the plane was about 90 miles off course when it hit the mountain for reasons unknown.

In July 1947, a French army alpine unit chanced upon the crash site. It recovered documents and the remains were interred that October at Arlington.

Between 1972 and 1988, as the glacier atop the mountain retreated, additional wreckage and remains were recovered on the Italian side of the border.

DNA testing recently established that some of the remains belonged to the 21-year-old Dobovich.

Carlton Dobovich said the match was made from Barbara Rice, a cousin in Georgia whom they had not known existed.

In an e-mail, Francis Raout, a young soldier in the French unit that found the wreckage in 1947, said he was grateful to have "rendered service" to the nation "whose sons liberated France."

"I would never have thought that in 2012 I could offer my sincere condolences to the family of Zoltan Dobovich," he said.

Also killed in the crash were Maj. Lawrence L. Cobb, the copilot; Lt. Alfred D. Ramirez, the navigator; Master Sgt. John E. Gilbert, flight engineer; Technical Sgt. William S. Cassell, assistant radio operator; and Staff Sgt. William A. Hilton, assistant engineer.

Carlton Dobovich said he had been informed that the remains of only four airmen have been identified.

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office, which is in charge of identifying military remains, did not respond Monday to a request for additional information.

Besides his nephew, Dobovich's survivors who are still alive include his niece Rosalie Baker and nephew Joseph Dobovich.

A visitation is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High St., Mount Holly. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Doyle cemetery.

The Politics of Immigration: Immigration Law Video: ?Labyrinth: The ...

Frontera NorteSur
November 28, 2012

Frontera NorteSur is pleased to make available a practical video on navigating the complexities of immigration law. Produced by Albuquerque filmmaker Jim Morrison in conjunction with the New Mexico State Attorney General?s Office, the video walks the viewer through the different pitfalls and processes an immigrant seeking legal residency or citizenship might encounter.

Titled in English ?Labyrinth: The Immigrant and the Law,? the half-hour program begins in the Paso del Norte borderland, where resident Modesta Flores offers historical recollections of a different Rio Grande and a less polarized time when friendly Border Patrol agents let migrants pass the line with a wink and a nod.

The documentary features interviews with Assistant New Mexico Attorney General Joel Cruz Esparza; Mauricio Ibarra; Mexican consul in Albuquerque; immigrant legal and social advocates; New Mexico immigration law attorney Megan Jordi; and a representative of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Longtime immigrants recall their own journeys as well as the problems of friends who followed in the migrant path.

With reports of legal scams surrounding the Obama Administration?s Deferred Deportation program for eligible young people, the production is a timely contribution to understanding the legalities and mechanisms of immigration law.

?Labyrinth: The Immigrant and the Law,? was sponsored by KLUZ, the Univision affiliate in Albuquerque. Produced mainly in Spanish with English sub-titles, the video can viewed at the below link.

Build Your Own Pocket-Sized Computer with a Raspberry Pi

Build Your Own Pocket-Sized Computer with a Raspberry PiThe Raspberry Pi is a fantastic little machine for doing all sorts of things, and because the Raspberry Pi is so small, it's also really portable. DIYer Nathan Morgan used that size to his advantage to create a tiny, portable computer complete with keyboard, trackpad, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

Morgan's build uses a Raspberry Pi, a 3.5" LCD screen from a car's backup camera system, a WiFi dongle, Bluetooth Dongle, and a tiny keyboard and trackpad. The little computer even has a 64GB SSD drive built into it. Then, the whole thing is packed into a 3D printed case. It's a neat little machine that ends up looking something like a bulky Nintendo DS, but it has a surprisingly amount of power considering its size. The grand total for the project was about $390 (most of that cost being the SSD). Head over to Morgan's site for a full breakdown of the parts, schematics, and everything else you need to build this for yourself.

What now in Newtown? Seize the change, healers say

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The grief will not end. Yet the healing must begin. So as the shock of Newtown's horrific school shooting starts to wear off, as the headlines fade and the therapists leave, residents are seeking a way forward through faith, community and a determination to seize their future.

At religious services Sunday, church leaders received standing ovations from parishioners they have been helping to cope with the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman also killed his mother and himself.

"This has been the worst week of my life," said Monsignor Robert Weiss of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which lost eight children and two adults in the massacre. He thanked the community for giving him strength to get through the week filled with funerals.

To deal with the short-term trauma, the state sent dozens of mental health professionals to Newtown. Sessions were available every day, at a half-dozen locations. Relief also has been provided by therapy and service dogs, massage therapists, acupuncturists and art therapists, from around Connecticut and the nation.

Rick Kaplan was driving back to South Carolina on Sunday with his nine service dogs. His "Canine Angels" usually assist disabled veterans, but he spent several days in Newtown with parents and grandparents of the victims, the victims' classmates, and other town residents.

The families "held dogs, cried, laughed, hugged and thanked us to say that this was invaluable," Kaplan said. "The love and respect of a dog is something, no doctor and no medicine can compete with what a dog can do."

The mother of one victim sat with one dog for an hour. Kaplan recalls her saying, "I can't tell you how guilty I feel because this is the first joy I've had in a week. I feel so guilty because I'm not thinking about my son right now."

After the Sunday service at Newtown's Trinity Episcopal Church, the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd received hugs and kisses from a long line of parishioners. She choked up as she read the names of the victims and offered a prayer for all of them, including gunman Adam Lanza and his slain mother, Nancy.

Deacon Rick Scinto of St. Rose of Lima said church officials will be teamed with professional counselors and therapists to provide assistance.

"I don't see us taking a lead role, but I certainly see us taking a cooperative role in any kind of counseling that they need. We have our niche. We're religious and we can talk about God and how the Lord figures in this whole mess," Scinto said.

Things will never be the same here. And that transformation itself ? heartbreaking and permanent as it may be ? is the key to long-term recovery, say some of those helping to lead the healing of this shattered town.

"This will never leave you and should never leave you. Your tears are proof of your love. The trick is, you've got to find a new form for your love," said Dr. John Woodall, a psychiatrist and Newtown resident.

Woodall is founder of The Unity Project, which has assisted recoveries from such tragedies such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the war in the former Yugoslavia and child soldier conflicts in Uganda. He said it's impossible to answer the question of why the Dec. 14 tragedy happened.

"The only helpful question to ask is what next?" Woodall said.

Charles Dumais, principal of Newtown High School, came up with an answer after consulting with Goodall. Dumais is exhorting his community to honor the dead through the kind of high character and good deeds that will create a future of resilience ? not sorrow.

"If you have not done so already, please take a moment now to think about what you wish the future to look like," Dumais wrote in an email to his students and staff. "We had no control over this senseless, cruel, horrific act, but we do have absolute control over our response to it."

People first must survive the present.

Dennis Stratford, who works for the school district, happened to be making a delivery to Sandy Hook Elementary School when the gunman attacked. He saw dead children. He saw the remains of dead children on those who survived. He waited agonizing minutes for his own child to emerge unharmed from the school. Two of his neighbors' children did not.

"I go home and cry every night, and I cry every morning," Stratford said.

He went to one counseling session, but the horrific images remain. What helps more is work: sorting through the warehouses full of gifts, delivering them where they need to go, or doing whatever else needs to be done for his town.

"There were nine minutes of evil, and an infinity of goodness after that," Stratford said, sitting on a forklift loaded with gifts. "This is therapy for me."

Matthew Crebbin, pastor of the Newtown Congregational Church and leader of the Newtown Interfaith Clergy Association, said the rest of the world will soon go back to normal.

"The bad news and the good news in Newtown is that our community will never be the same," Crebbin said. "It doesn't have to mean that this is a world of just loss and sorrow and spiraling disruption if we can draw from this strength and have a sense that we are called to something more and to strengthen connections to each other."

How to Get the Most Out of Ezine Advertising | Dave In China ? Dave ...

If there is anything at all that makes you feel overwhelmed with your online business, then that just means you have to learn a bit more and get more comfortable. This is just a trial phase as you get more familiar with click here, and those who survive have a good chance of going all the way. There are several reasons why those who are making money with their business tend to outsource as much as possible. We will delve into alternatives that will work well with what we have just mentioned. Never forget, when you are first exposed to something you have never tried before, proceed with caution and do some testing before doing a major roll-out. However, regardless of how you approach outsourcing or anything else, just recover and roll with any mistakes you may make. Ezine advertising has traditionally not received as much press as other methods, but that does not mean it is less effective than all the others. There are most definitely some things you want to do and also avoid if you desire the highest conversions for your ads. What are the wise and necessary steps to find an ezine publisher that is good for you? One of the hallmarks of an ezine business that has been around is the number of resources available on their site such as for initiating your ad run. But needless to say, they want business; so if there is no such form then something else will no doubt be in place. You want to talk to them a little to gauge how professional they are in their business. When you execute little strategies like this, the ezine owner probably will have no clue; those who do not care are worth avoiding. Those ezine publishers who take the time and effort to make sure things flow smoothly are the one who will take care of your ads. Few things can compare in IM to the power of testing, and the reason for that is you can optimize based on the results. There are other things you can test, and running scaled down tests for speedupmypchq.com or methods previously never used is one of them. Who will ever know why people in business do not do the things that will help them to make more money. You will learn from your mistakes such as proceeding a too quickly and without enough thought about the consequences. The scope of some projects can quickly and easily overwhelm a lot of newer marketers, and in that case do some testing and see what your results are. The extent of what will be involved in any test situation will be determined by your primary method of marketing. Have an open mind to what you can do, and in this instance we are thinking about all that is possible with using your own website as a test platform. Most people make use of Google Analytics for tracking everything that happens on their site, and that will be suitable for any testing. We are not sure how you feel, but we certainly feel like taking care of our particular subject line for our ad. The response to your ad will be horrible if the subject lines in any ezines that run ads are just something that states it is a solo ad. You realize how important this point is, so just save the hassle and avoid dealing with those who do not allow you to make your own subject lines. You want to deal with someone with a clue and wants you to succeed by helping you as much as possible. Your preliminary research is designed to give you the best idea or feeling that running an ad in any ezine may be worth it. Also, like we said, keep in mind that the results of other advertisers can be an indication but no prediction of your results. You can check out the older issues of the ezine publication by going through its archives; this will give you a clear idea as to how many advertisers have used the ezine for their needs in the past and how many of them repeated their ads. There are no guarantees that the archives will be there, but if so then you have something more to research. You can make mistakes with ezine advertising if you ignore the fact finding stages before advertising. There will never be an end to mistakes, and so you merely learn and keep moving forward. Then, keep in mind that successful ads will depend on other factors as well such as your ad copy, so there is more to this.

What Do You Do When Someone Gives You a Gift and Don't Have One for Them?

What Do You Do When Someone Gives You a Gift and Don't Have One for Them? One of the most uncomfortable situations during the holiday gift-giving time is when you receive a gift from someone when you didn't buy them anything. It's always awkward when it happens, so we want to know: what do you do when someone hands you a gift and you don't have one for them?

This situation might come up in a wide variety of situations. In some cases, it's probably not a big deal, say, if a boss or parent gives you a gift. Other times, you might be expected to give something in return. Do you come up with an excuse for not getting a gift? Or do you fess up that you didn't buy anything? Let's hear it.

Delhi Gang-Rape: Protests, Anger, Condemnation Sweep Across India

Police, who have made a number of arrests in connection with Sunday night?s assault, are now contending with women?s rights activists and others protesting the poor safety of women in Delhi.

According to reports in Indian and UK media, Delhi police dispersed a crowd of demonstrators, mostly college students, with water cannon. The protesters tried to tear down barricades outside the residence of Delhi?s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

They carried placards and chanted: "We want equal rights for women."

"I feel it is sick what is happening across the country. It is totally sick, and it needs to stop," a female protester Smitha said, according to the Guardian.

A university student named Aditi Roy who blocked traffic angrily declared: "We want to jolt people awake from the cozy comfort of their cars. We want people to feel the pain of what women go through every day.?

Female MPs from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a separate protest outside parliament; while hundreds of other activists held a rally outside Delhi?s police headquarters, demanding swift justice and better policing.

Some lawmakers have even called for the death penalty for convicted rapists.

On Sunday evening, a 23-year-old Indian medical student was traveling with a male companion on a private bus when she was sexually assaulted by at least four men, including bus company staff.

The pair, who were returning home from an evening at the cinema, were beaten, stripped and tossed out of the vehicle. She is now at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, listed in critical condition.

The bus where the incident occurred reportedly passed through several police checkpoints.

"We have been screaming ourselves hoarse demanding greater security for women and girls. But the government, the police and others responsible for public security have ignored the daily violence that women face," said Sehba Farooqui, a women's rights activist.

The head of the ruling Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi, the most powerful person in India, visited the hospital on Tuesday evening and met with doctors and the victim?s family.

Gandhi, daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi and widow of Rajiv, later vowed the government will take the "strictest possible measures" to prevent such incidents.

In letters to senior government officials, Gandhi wrote: ?such violence and criminality needs not only to be condemned, it calls for a concerted effort to fight it? and ?it is a shame for us, who are responsible for the security of our cities that a young woman can be raped in a moving bus in the capital of the country and flung onto the street.?

She added: ?It is imperative that the police and other agencies concerned are sensitized to the dangers that our daughters, sisters and mothers face every day. The security agencies must be motivated, trained and equipped to deal with the menace. I hope [the Delhi government] will initiate immediate action to remedy the situation.?

Even the biggest film star of Hollywood weighed in.

On his Facebook account Amitabh Bachchan asked "What is going wrong with our society, our people?," adding that vigilante justice may be necessary to deal with such atrocities.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called the incident ?a heinous crime. It is very upsetting,? before a group of female MPs.

Under Singh?s direction, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, who is responsible for law and order in Delhi, promised that steps will be taken to beef up police patrols in the evening, while bus and transport employees will face more security and background checks.

"Private buses, when not in use, must be parked with their owners and the photo identification of the driver and staff of every bus would have to be displayed, and the police would enforce this," he said.

"Buses with dark windows and curtains would be impounded.?

Delhi police have come under fire not only from the public and lawmakers, but also from the judiciary.

The Delhi High Court, which ordered police to submit a report on the sexual assault, asked: "How did the bus [where the rape took place] cross five police checkpoints without anybody stopping it? Those responsible have to be punished.?

On a broader scale, Indians are questioning the society?s treatment of women ? rapes, burnings, physical abuse, torture and murder are widespread across the nation. Female fetuses are often aborted in favor of males.

Investigations into violence against women are often slow, and prosecution sometimes never occur, leading men to act with impunity.

"We have thousands of rape cases pending in different courts of the country. As a result, there is no fear of law," said Ranjana Kumari, a sociologist at the New Delhi-based Centre for Social Research, according to the Guardian.

Apple's iPhone Miracle - Business Insider

Apple's stock is in a funny place right now.

After a big moonshot, it's fallen back to earth. And now it's locked in this mid to low $500-range.

Analysts who had been universally bullish are reconsidering their positions and cutting price targets.

What's wrong?

I think it comes down to the fact that Apple created and captured a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with the iPhone.

And, the era of explosive iPhone growth has drawn to a close, at least at the current iPhone price points.

Apple will continue to grow earnings and profits nicely. The company will remain robustly healthy. But the mind boggling days of 125% EPS growth and 82% revenue growth are over.

Why?

Why can't Apple just recreate the miracle with a new product--the iPad Mini, for example, or a fantastic new TV?

Because the iPhone was a nearly perfect business at a nearly perfect time for Apple. And those don't come along very often.

Google's search business is and was a magic money machine. People are doing billions of searches, and Google very simply places a few discreet ads at the top and side of the search results. The ads aren't intrusive, and are often very helpful. It's an incredible business.

For Apple, the iPhone has been a magic money machine. Thanks to carrier subsidies in most developed countries, consumers pay an affordable $200 for the phone when they sign up for a two-year contract. Apple, however, collects $650, with carriers covering the other $450. This is perfect for Apple. It gets mass-market pricing?and premium pricing. Plus, its customers come back every two years to get a new phone. And, thanks to Apple's manufacturing efficiency, the company's profit margin on the phone sales is extraordinary.

This magic money machine led to Apple's sales exploding from $37.5 billion in 2008 to $156.5 billion in 2012. That insane sales growth led to Apple's insane stock growth.

But, Apple's money machine has largely run through its opportunity.

In the last couple of years, as the explosive growth in the smartphone market has shifted to lower-priced phones in emerging markets, Apple's iPhone has been smoked by Android in market share. Globally Android has 75% of the market, according to Gartner. In the U.S., Apple has about 50% of the market, according to Kantar.

Apple has produced record profits and sales even with a small amount of market share, but that's only going to get harder in the future.?

The smartphone market is still a huge opportunity, but for Apple, there are limitations. The next phase of growth is coming from older, poorer people around the world. It's unclear if those people are willing to buy expensive iPhones. The carrier subsidy model isn't as popular elsewhere in the world.

If Apple does want to address the low-end of the market with a cheaper iPhone, it presents its own set of problems. It could make a $200 phone, but Apple's sales wouldn't necessarily skyrocket since a cheaper phone would bring in less revenue and less profit. It could also cannibalize sales of the high-end iPhone.

In short, a cheaper iPhone brings market share, but at a cost to Apple's revenue and profits.

We can see this dynamic playing out with the iPad Mini, which is selling well. It's going to affect Apple's sales and earnings. Apple makes less money on each iPad Mini sold as compared to a big iPad. Therefore analysts are dialing back their estimates for Apple next year.

Speaking of the iPad, it's important to note the difference between the iPad business and the iPhone business. The iPad is not a magic money machine. It's just another PC. No carriers are subsidizing the iPad. So its profit growth will pale in comparison to the profit growth of the iPhone. And an iPad, because its $600, is less likely to be upgraded every other year.

CEO Tim Cook needs to pull a Steve Jobs and invent that next product to keep investors happy. But the catch is that there is probably no other product as perfectly profitable as the iPhone.

For the longest time we've heard Apple's next big product is going to be an Apple television. Supposedly the Apple television is coming next year.

TVs are replaced every eight years, which is quite different than Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Mac lines. Gene Munster estimates Apple could capture 5-10% of the TV market in year one, which would add 4-8% to the company's revenue. Over time it could kick in more, but a TV will never be as lucrative as an iPhone.

One thing Apple investors are waking up to, in other words, is that the iPhone's amazing run is winding down. And that there may never be another iPhone.

Role of oxidative stress needs to be re-evaluated

Oxidative stress is believed to cause a number of diseases. Up to now, it has been common practice to measure oxidative stress levels by determining the oxidation state of a small molecule called glutathione in cell extracts. Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) have been the first to discover that cells under stress deposit their oxidized glutathione in a cellular waste repository. This protects cells from oxidative stress and questions the validity of the conventional measuring method.

Cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis the list of diseases which have been linked to oxidative stress is long and even includes the very process of aging. Oxidative stress is caused by so-called reactive oxygen compounds, which include the notorious "free radicals". If a cell is exposed to more reactive oxygen compounds than it can instantly degrade, it is under oxidative stress. As a result, important components such as proteins, DNA and lipids are oxidized and thus get damaged.

To determine whether a cell is under oxidative stress, scientists often analyze the oxidation state of glutathione. Glutathione is a small molecule which gets oxidized to protect the cell from reactive oxygen compounds. In theory, the amount of oxidized glutathione should therefore indicate whether a cell is healthy or under oxidative stress. However, researchers in the team of Associate Professor (PD) Dr. Tobias Dick have demonstrated that this hypothesis, which is the basis of a large number of scientific studies, is deceptive.

"Up to now, it was necessary to destroy the cells in order to measure the amount of oxidized glutathione," Tobias Dick explains. "However, this means that any spatial resolution is lost." Therefore, virtually nothing was known about where exactly oxidized glutathione is found in the cells. Scientists have presumed that it remains in the cytoplasm, where it is formed.

To find out more about the whereabouts of glutathione in the cell, Tobias Dick and co-workers developed biosensors which indicate the oxidation state of glutathione in intact cells by releasing light signals. In yeast cells, the researchers were able, for the first time, to follow the path of oxidized glutathione through the living cell in real time. They were surprised to find that, rather than remaining in the cytoplasm, it promptly gets locked up in a safe depot, the vacuole.

The cytoplasm, where all important cellular metabolic processes happen, is thus reliably protected from oxidative damage. Cells that would have been considered to be under oxidative stress using the conventional method appeared entirely healthy in their cytoplasm. Tobias Dick and his team could subsequently show that this is not only true for yeast cells but also for various mammalian cells and also for cancer cells.

These results mean that contrary to previously held beliefs the level of oxidative glutathione does not indicate whether or not a cell is under oxidative stress. "Therefore, it is important to re-evaluate prior studies that have established a link between oxidative stress and various diseases based on the conventional method."

These results mean that contrary to previously held beliefs the level of oxidative glutathione does not indicate whether or not a cell is under oxidative stress. Countering the new horsemen of the apocalypse

Nuclear war, climate change, lab-created viruses and out-of-control machines need to be understood, but there are risks to lumping threats together

CALL them the modern horsemen of the apocalypse: nuclear war, climate change, doomsday viruses and out-of-control machines. These are the subjects of the proposed Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER), which this week attracted much media attention. "We're talking about threats to our very existence stemming from human activity," says Martin Rees, a cosmologist at the University of Cambridge who wants to found the centre with philosopher Huw Price and Skype inventor Jaan Tallinn.

These new horsemen map quite readily onto the portrayals of war, famine, pestilence and death. Perhaps that's because they're only the latest manifestation of age-old anxieties about the fate of the human race. So is the CSER just the respectable face of doom-mongering?

Events that would entirely eradicate humanity are hard to envisage (New Scientist, 3 March, p 36), but the 20th century saw the advent of technology that could seriously threaten human life as we know it - nuclear weaponry - and the 21st might well see the emergence of more. So the end of the world is now more conceivable than ever - although there's no particular reason to expect it imminently (garbled Mayan prophecies notwithstanding). And Rees is right to say that we don't pay enough attention to the huge, rare risks that might bring it about. Setting them out and sizing them up is worthwhile.

But do we need a centre to bring together specialists in such disparate fields? It's not clear what is to be gained by lumping together, say, nuclear war - whose risks are relatively well understood and contained - and rapacious AI, whose key mitigant may be software design rather than weapons inspections. Why not include genuinely existential natural risks, such as Earth-crossing asteroids? And then there's the potential for robust climate change analysis to become associated with as yet speculative "Terminator studies".

We won't know unless we try it. And the effort might bring fresh perspective to a world full of people who still fret that the LHC will spawn a world-destroying black hole - while they stubbornly ignore the clear and present dangers of climate change.

Israel detains Gaza fishermen for sailing too far out to sea

With 47 percent of the popular vote, Mitt Romney may become the president of nothing more than Ironystan. Yes, the final general-election tally is trickling in and, as fate would have it, Romney's total might look more like that mythical number after all. Well, according to David Wasserman of the Cook Political report, it's more like 47.49 and dropping, which, of course rounds down to 47 ? the same percentage of Americans?he said were moochers and takers in a video?that was one of the nails in the coffin of his presidential campaign.

GOP divide surfaces early in 2014 Senate contest

WASHINGTON (AP) ? That didn't take long.

The fissures within the Republican Party that some say cost the GOP control of the Senate have resurfaced just three weeks after the election. This time conservatives are targeting a popular veteran congresswoman from a storied West Virginia political family making a bid for Democrat Jay Rockefeller's Senate seat in 2014.

Within an hour of Shelley Moore Capito's announcement of her candidacy, the influential and conservative Club for Growth branded her as the "establishment candidate" whose record in Congress of supporting prominent bailouts has led to bigger government. Capito just won her seventh term to Congress, securing about 70 percent of her district's vote. Her father, former Gov. Arch Moore, for years was the chief political rival of the man she hopes to replace in the Senate.

The new head of the Senate's GOP campaign arm, Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, dismissed the criticism from the right ? "I don't see this as damaging to her cause" ? but it's far from inconsequential in the Republicans' bid to retake the Senate.

Moran hasn't officially taken over as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee yet, but he already finds himself defending a potential nominee who's widely popular in her state while trying to avoid alienating influential players on the party's right flank.

Downplaying the impact of the Club for Growth's criticism of Capito, Moran said Tuesday his committee hasn't made a decision on how heavily involved it will be in West Virginia's Republican Senate primary two years from now.

"Shelley Moore Capito is a known quantity in West Virginia," he said. "Her voting record is acceptable to the majority of West Virginians in her district for a long period of time. I don't see this as damaging to her cause."

Rockefeller, 75, has not said whether he'll seek a sixth term in the Senate, but Capito has the name recognition and fundraising ability to mount an effective campaign against an incumbent.

The Club for Growth wasted no time listing what it believes are her numerous faults. They likened her to candidates such as Rick Berg of North Dakota and Rep. Denny Rehberg of Montana, saying that while they were supposedly the most electable of the Republican candidates, they lost Senate races in Republican-leaning states.

"Her candidacy will undoubtedly be cheered by the GOP establishment, and dire warnings will be issued against any 'divisive' primary challenges, lest other candidates hurt Capito's chances of winning," said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. "The problem is that Congresswoman Capito's record looks a whole lot like the establishment candidates who lost this year."

But many of the Club for Growth's candidates in recent elections also have stumbled badly. Richard Mourdock lost in Indiana after bouncing veteran Sen. Richard Lugar in the primary. In the 2010 elections, the organization threw its considerable financial backing behind Sharron Angle in Nevada and Ken Buck in Colorado, both losers to vulnerable Democratic incumbents.

Moran said the criticism of Capito from the Club for Growth was not unexpected.

"This is going to be decided not by the NRSC and not by the Club for Growth; it's going to be decided by the people of West Virginia," he said.

In the last election cycle, Democratic leaders in Washington didn't mind playing favorites during the primaries, heavily recruiting candidates they thought had the best chance of winning, while shunning some they did not see as formidable. GOP leaders, in contrast, sat back as their potential nominees fought it out.

Moran said figuring out the NRSC's role in the coming primaries will take a couple of months, and said his organization will play a role in some states.

"It's a state-by-state issue," he said.

Democratic officials, meanwhile, are enjoying the sideshow of a potential GOP split already in the works.

"Their argument is correct that the handpicked Republican establishment candidates did just as poorly as the more tea-party candidates," said Matt Canter, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "It's hard to argue with them in that respect."

Canter said the establishment candidates stumbled in part because of their efforts to appeal to tea party supporters and strong anti-government organizations such as the Club for Growth. He said an outsider might find it easy to defeat Capito, because GOP primaries in West Virginia typically do not attract a lot of voters.

"It would be very easy for a right-wing candidate to get the votes needed to win," Canter said.

Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said he would have preferred for the Club for Growth to have waited to see if a viable alternative to Capito emerges before attacking her. With Mitt Romney easily winning the state, Republicans figure to have a strong shot of winning the Senate seat in 2014.

"She's the best that state has to offer at this point," Bonjean said. "There's not a deep bench of Republican candidates who can immediately step into the fold, who can take on Sen. Rockefeller. Going after a female Republican right now when we lost the women's vote is not necessarily the wisest political move either."

Chocola said supporting fiscal conservatives such as Jeff Flake in Arizona and Ted Cruz in Texas, both Senate winners this month, is the best way back for the GOP.

"They are the future of the Republican Party," he said.

Excellent Tips And Advice For Effective E-Mail Marketing - Businesses

Have you used e-mail marketing but not seen the results you were promised? Maybe you are interested in taking advantage of this useful tool, but don?t know where to start? This article was written just for you! The piece that follows includes great tips for composing email messages sure to boost sales and build relationships.

Use passive and active feedback to enhance e-mail marketing efforts. You can get active feedback from your target audience by asking what people think of your emails. Passive feedback is generally not seen by the readers. There are many software tools available that will track the clicked links on your email messages.

The emails you send out should entice your customers. Your customers are more likely to deal with you if there is some type of incentive involved. For example, you can offer free shipping on purchases over a certain minimum dollar amount for those who click on a certain link and place an order on your site.

TIP! Keep the graphics to a minimum in your emails. There are some email services and programs which block or are unable to display images, so you are restricting your audience if you rely on them too heavily.

It?s extremely important to send your marketing emails with a personalized touch. Personalization goes beyond sending an email with the recipient?s name stuck into the greeting line. Use every piece of information your subscribers give you. Separate your subscribers into small groups that have common interests. Create different messages for these different groups.

Change up the format of your emails to give them a touch that?s personal. If you typically use HTML formatting for your messages, then occasionally use plain text formatting instead. If you write these well then you can actually provide a really intimate and simple message that can make people feel comfortable with looking at and purchasing your products.

Be sure that every email address you have is valid. Don?t waste time receiving email addresses, only to get a message that the address was invalid. It simply wastes precious time!

TIP! Using organic marketing strategies is the best way to develop your email list. You should never buy or rent an email address list.

Try out more than one email format. The top of the emails should always contain the most interesting and important information. Try out different approaches to see what gives you the best reaction. After you have identified which format is most effective, you should continue utilizing it. This helps your customers form expectations about future emails and lets them easily find the information they?re looking for.

E-mail marketing is a great way to market your business. Like everything else though, it only works when used in the right way. As a result of reading this article, you can make e-mail marketing a success for your company. Use what you?ve learned here, and the results will make themselves apparent quite quickly.

TIP! Good layout is key to email marketing success. Though graphics may be tempting to use, spam filters are more likely to block them.

When promoting your business with online marketing, carefully monitor the information you are offering consumers. The content should be valuable to your customers, and it should be different from content on other sites. You want to put new content on your website so that visitors can learn something new.

TIP! Most advertisements that are short and sweet get the most attention, and therefore are the most successful. Emphasize how little time is needed to place an order, how fast the order is shipped, or how quickly they can expect to see results from the use of your product or service.

One interesting way of doing internet marketing for your site is taking advantage when it comes to image searches. When you add relevant pictures to your site, you will be able to get visitors who are searching for the photos you provide. Visitors who might just be looking for information sometimes end up looking through your site. That makes you more popular and breeds familiarity for your brand.

TIP! Encourage new visitors to your site with a $1 promotion. This will build a ton of buzz for your business.

It is important to use descriptive captions with any images or pictures that you post. The text in these descriptions should include keywords that are relevant to your site in order to increase your search engine results. Giving all of your images appropriate, descriptive captions can make a noticeable difference in your search engine results page standing.

TIP! Use vivid language and images to catch people?s attention. Pad your descriptions with enticing adjectives.

Learn how to use HTML tags. Your important content is indicated by these tags and will be displayed in bold. Search engines see this emphasized content and give it more weight when judging the quality and relevance of your page. Use these tags wisely, and make sure to emphasize the keywords you really want to promote.

TIP! If you?re trying to gain more views on your website, and do better in search engine results, you have to provide unique and original content. Customers want to visit the best website that will fill their needs, and successful websites offer something different from their competitor?s websites.

The database that utilizes customer relationship management software ensures that your Website marketing strategies are more successful. It can help you see past successes and guide you in the ways that your business and marketing strategies should be going. Then, you can tailor your communications to showcase accessories or products that are similar to those that customers have already bought from your business.

TIP! Do you offer a reward system for people who regularly buy your products? This will help you establish a good image for your company and get your customers to order more than once. This is they type of business practice that will drum up chatter about you.

'Lincoln' director Spielberg speaks in Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? With his new film about the 16th president in theaters, two-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg was to make the keynote address during ceremonies that celebrate the 149th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address."

Spielberg's remarks at Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg on Monday were to be accompanied by a recitation of the famous speech by a Lincoln re-enactor. Sixteen citizenship candidates from 11 countries were scheduled to take the oath of allegiance.

The event at Gettysburg National Military Park was expected to take about an hour, and was free. Previous speakers include presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

Carl Sandberg, in his biography of Lincoln, said it was a speech that conveyed the message that democracy was worth fighting for.

"It had the dream touch of vast and furious events epitomized for any foreteller to read what was to come," Sandberg wrote. "His cadences sang the ancient song that where there is freedom men have fought and sacrificed for it, and that freedom is worth men's dying for."

Gettysburg is where the U.S. military was able to stop an invasion of the North by Confederate troops under Gen. Robert E. Lee, a major turning point of the American Civil War. The 150th year since that battle will be marked in 2013, particularly around the battle's anniversary in early July.

"Lincoln," which stars Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, concentrates on the period leading up to the president's assassination in 1865.

Lincoln gave the three-minute speech, which famously begins with the phrase, "four score and seven years ago," at the dedication of the cemetery four months after the battle.
